Between goats, cows and the Alps, Fabiano (38) becomes a father. But the idyll is deceptive: he tries hard to make the alpine cheese the way his drop-out parents did in the 70s. In addition to debts, feelings of guilt also gnaw at him. Last year, a Macedonian moonlighter had a fatal accident. Since then, his death has never let Fabiano go. How can he and his girlfriend Eva build a life together with their offspring under such difficult circumstances?

Set against the imposing and oppressively quiet backdrop of the Ticino Alps, Aldo Gugolz’s film turns out to be an exciting tightrope walk between a criminal case and a sensitive portrait of a young farmer.

A twisted lesson the 17-year-old Ida is about to learn. Having recently lost her mother in a car accident, she has been taken in by her aunt and three cousins, whom she barely knows. Theirs is a loving home, but it soon transpires that the family, led by its caring but disciplinarian matriarch, engages in criminal activities. As boundaries keep on being pushed, Ida finds herself torn between her safety and the allure of her cousins’ ferocious behaviour. When the clan descends into conflict with the police, Ida has to decide what is more dear to her: the loyalty to her new family or her own life.
Featuring a superb central performance by newcomer Sandra Guldberg Kampp, Jeanette Nordahl’s fiercely intelligent debut is an arresting study of family and dysfunctionality, the nourishing and burdensome nature of love, and the complexity of desire. Die Insulaner lieben ihre unwirtliche und von Stürmen umtoste Insel, sind stolz auf ihre helvetische Abstammung und halten seit Generationen an der Schweizer Kultur fest, die Alfred von Rodt 1877 als erster helvetischer Kolonialherr mitbrachte. Squabbling with his girlfriend and stranded on different friends’ couches, 38-year-old Guido tries to transform his wacky urban drift into a chance for a new beginning.

Guido leads a content and uncomplicated life until one day a leaky condom comes between him and Chiara. While the idea of a baby makes Guido want to get more settled, Chiara admits to growing doubts about their relationship. They argue until Guido packs his bags and leaves. Unable to be alone, Guido asks parents and friends to put him up. As he moves from one couch to the next, he gains a whole new perspective on his family and friends’ relationships, witnessing their everyday lives and various romantic entanglements up close. Approaching 40 with nothing to his name, Guido’s life is far from what he thought it would be at this point. Stranded at the end of this love he still finds a way to laugh it all off and embrace life’s curveballs.
